Lancashire is a county in the North West of England and it was established in 1182, a little behind other counties. Its name came from the city of Lancaster which means the ‘Roman fort on the River Lune.’ It combines the name of the river with the Old English word cæster, derived from the Roman word for ‘fort or camp.’
Today, the county has a population of 1,219,799 with more than half are females (617,264) and the rest are males (602,535). As for schools and universities, Lancashire has four. It also has three local football clubs. Accrington Stanley F.C. was founded in 1968 plays at the Crown Ground. The Lancaster F.C. which was founded in 1911 plays at the Giant Axe and the Chorley Football Club, which was founded in 1883, plays at Victory Park.
As for the places to see in Lancashire, here are some of them. Lancaster Castle is the medieval castle overlooking the River Lune. There is the Forest of Bowland or Bowland Fells in the north-east of Lancashire. The area has gritstone fells, deep valleys and peat moorland.
Williamson Park by millionaire James Williamson, 1st Baron Ashton, features the Ashton Memorial. Brockholes, a nature reserve in Preston, has the UK’s first floating visitor village. Rivington Pike is a hill on Winter Hill which is part of the West Pennine Moors at Rivington, Chorley. You can find the prominent landmark, Pike Tower, at the summit. The area is popular for hill walking and mountain biking.
WWT Martin Mere is a wetland nature reserve and features a wildfowl collection. Managed by Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust, you can find this at Tarlscough, Burscough.
As for green spaces, you can find two. The Gresgarth Hall Gardens was created by the renowned garden designer Arabella Lennox-Boyd. It has several plants, shrubs, and trees such as ferns, lilacs, azaleas, and magnolias. Rufford Old Hall Gardens has woodland areas and displays of rhododendrons and azaleas. It also has interesting topiary, climbing plants and a collection of old-fashioned plants.
